At Oasis Academy Fir Vale, we believe that our children live in a world where they require the skills and qualifications, flexibility, emotional intelligence and expertise to be leaders and to thrive as human beings. Our children live in a world where they are accepted as individuals and celebrated for who they are. This is key in navigating a complex and ever-changing environment. As a school, we study a curriculum which looks at meeting the needs of where we think our children are and what skills we can provide them with to help them flourish. We participate in class assemblies alongside the Oasis 9 habits.

Our children are offered a good range of extra-curricular clubs that run after school, from 3:10pm to 3:45pm. They can sign up for these opportunities and they are offered free of charge for all pupils. These activities will enable children to build a range of new skills as well as learning to socialise and work with pupils from different year groups, building their confidence and social skills as well as building their resilience. Our clubs enable our children to follow the Oasis 9-habits in all that they do, allowing opportunities for children to show compassion, be patient, considerate and forgiving if things don’t go to plan.

The range of activities vary across the year, but children will have the opportunity to take part in football club, Eco-Club, dance, cooking and boxing. Clubs are run by academy staff, as well as some external providers.

As a school, we believe that children should be offered a range of character-building enrichment opportunities, where learning can take place outside of the classroom. As well as being academic, these visits enable children to develop their social skills and experience opportunities that they may not get the chance to take part in outside of school. Every child is offered the opportunity to take part in an educational visit in each year of the academy. In addition, children are able to earn extra visits out as part of rewards week for having outstanding attendance, where visits to the seaside, theme parks and Yorkshire Wildlife Park are on offer.

In addition, in Year 6, children are given the opportunity to attend an overnight residential visit with their class. This visit is fundamental in allowing children to build and develop their character, spend a night away from home where they will learn new skills and be able to socialise with their friends. This visit will enable pupils to be ready for their transition to secondary school in September.

We run a number of reading initiatives, including Book at Bedtime events, which give parents the chance to read with their child while enjoying a yummy hot chocolate and the Reading Buddy programme, where children from Y6 support younger children with their reading. We also have a take home corner in the library where students can choose their own book to take home.

On a Friday afternoon, children are rewarded for their excellent attitude to learning by taking part in a choice of activities for half an hour. These activities range from football and team games, STEM related activities to music club, arts and crafts and jewellery making. This offers pupils the chance to work on an activity which they have an interest in away from the curriculum, allowing children to build and develop new and different skills. Pupils sign up for a different activity each half term, allowing them to sample a range of different activities and build a variety of different skills across the year.

Throughout their time at Oasis Academy Fir Vale, all pupils from Year 4 upwards will have a chance to attend and take part in transition activities at Fir Vale School, the feeder secondary school. This enables transition to be smooth when pupils leave us in Year 6 as they already have visited the school and have met some teachers and pupils from there. A good range of activities are planned and delivered to your children, from Maths quizzes to hair and beauty, Drama, Science and Engineering to name but a few.

At Oasis Academy Fir Vale we use interventions as a short-term focused teaching approach that have specific outcomes planned for children with additional needs.  Interventions are used alongside high-quality teaching methods to support children.  We provide a range of interventions for all four categories of special educational needs. The four categories of needs are broken down into.

1. Communication and Interaction
2. Cognition and Learning
3. Social, Emotional and Mental Health
4. Sensory and /or Physical

Children develop leadership skills by applying to take on different roles in school

• Young Interpreters – This involves training children to act as mentors for their peers who are learning English as an additional language.
• Wellbeing Champions – Their role is to promote positive mental health.
• Peer Mediators – Their role is to help children develop the skills to handle conflict well. The mediators are trained by CRESST in conflict resolution and mediation via the University of Sheffield.
• Anti-Bullying Ambassadors – Their role is to give inspiration to others, promote anti-bullying initiatives and carry out practical ideas to prevent bullying and ensure everyone feels safe and happy in the academy. 
• Student Parliament – The student parliament serves as the students' representative body. It initiates and directs student activities, helps share students' ideas, interests and concerns. They help to make decisions about how the school is run and take on projects that support the children's learning and development, such as organising charity events, representing the school at outside events or ensuring the school is environmentally friendly.. After a visit from MP, Gill Furniss, she said “The pupils (student parliament) shared their interest in the promotion of online safety due to their own experience of social media, and it is admirable that they wanted to raise awareness regarding this issue with their local MP.”
• Play Leaders – Encourage and promote pupils to play games together. They have received training via skilled sports experts in how to engage children in play and games.

Our Breakfast Club is open from 8:15 - 8:40 daily. Our kitchen team serve a range of breakfast items, while a a member of staff leads various activities to support home learning and wellbeing.
